Can my loved one stay at home?
Yes. In many circumstances, your loved one can remain at home after death.
Rest supports families who want to spend more time with their person before burial or cremation. That might mean keeping someone at home for a while, sitting with them, inviting family and friends in, or taking part in washing and dressing them.
Where cooling is needed, equipment such as a cooling plate can help keep the person at an appropriate temperature while family have that time together. If the death is being investigated by the coroner, there are additional steps and permissions involved, but that does not necessarily mean a family cannot later bring their loved one home.
There is no single right way to say goodbye. For some families, having time at home is an important part of their goodbye.
