I received a call yesterday, asking how to open the ashes container and it reminded me that we'd updated the FAQs on the website with a separate cremation page. It can be confusing, and I have to admit that I really didn't look too closely at Mum's container till earlier this year, about a year after she died.

Anyway, it's pretty simple. A flat head screwdriver will help to pop off the top.

These rectangular greyish boxes are the standard Australia wide, but if you were interested in a different kind of container (like a scatter tube), please let us know when you speak with us.

When a client chooses to decorate a Daisybox, they can also select a wonderful liner made from reclaimed fabrics. Local volunteer group, Boomerang Bags - Stanthorpe, have been making these liners for us and it really gives another nice sustainable touch to each funeral. We keep the liners in their own fabric bag, also made by the group, and each one is embellished with a quote.

Life definitely throws us a lot to deal with from time to time, and the strength of this family is immense. I just loved their choice, and we agree that it is always possible to be kind.

I just posted about IS THIS NORMAL? by Jo Lincolne from Big Love Death Care. I thought it important to follow up with a little post because here in the Southern Downs, we are so lucky to have our own amazing end of life doula, consultant, support person and funeral celebrant in Deb Anderson.

When Deb speaks at our info sessions, she says, "my job is to meet you where you are on your journey". It's so fitting, because regardless of the stage you are at, end of life support people, doulas, can be there. You could be 40, in good health and wanting to get organised for a "what if" situation, you could be retiring and starting to think ahead or you could be closer still. Wherever you are is where you are.

Deb started The Last Chapter, providing locals with a range of services in this space, including assistance with end of life support, advanced care planning, and also works with Rest Funerals in our quest to help people that want to, die at home. Whether it guiding families to decorate a Daisybox or creating a vigil space for families wanting to create their own kind of ceremony, she can help.

I received a present in the post... A book, well a few copies of a very special book.

IS THIS NORMAL?

Jo Lincolne is a very active person in the end of life community, and a very special person to me. She is possibly the reason why Rest Funeral Services here in the Southern Downs, exists. While helping my mum and all of us around Mum cope, deal... however we put it, she inspired me to take action and quite literally change my life.

I am on this journey, to help others deal with loss in the way that I can. I'm not a councillor, I'm not a grief specialist. My way of helping is to give people access to a more affordable funeral or simply give them access to a funeral that's more ... them.

As I read through this great resource, there was a paragraph that really hit me, because it sums up what we experienced with Jo and really encapsulates the many people doing good work in this space.

"Our job is to meet people where they are, witness their pain, hear what they have to say and sit in our own discomfort as we witness their pain. This requires presence of mind, courage, and some practice."

The average spend on flowers for a funeral is in the region of $300-350, with some offering casket sprays alone from $375. We're not saying there is anything wrong with that, so long as it's what you want.

Mum put a ban on paid flowers for her funeral, allowing only those picked from our garden, hers or offered by others. It was the most natural and sustainable way we could do it at the time, and she would and loved it.

Recently I was in the Netherlands and caught up with a friend in the industry. She showed me some photos of flowers at a natural burial ground where the rule was, only what grows in the area, nothing introduced. Nothing to interfere with the local fauna and flora. Some might think it plain, but nature really has its own way of being beautiful.

What an experience... while it wasn't a comprehens

What an experience... while it wasn't a comprehensive academic tour, the time I spent in Europe and the spaces dedicated to death was an eye opener. Like many in this industry, I hadn't really thought much about it till I experienced it. Now, the more I think about it, the more I want to be a part of it.

With this business, through the information sessions we host and just in general when speaking to people, we go on about being prepared. No matter the age, being organised and ready can save your family so much time and confusion when it comes to your funeral. Your choices can also change throughout your life, so "I'm too young to plan this" won't cut it.

Right now, my preferred way to go is cremation. I feel though, within a few years my choice will change. Hopefully it will be natural burial... watch this space.
