Like it or not, just like taxes, death is inevitable. And it can be expensive.
Burial plots, coffins, headstones, flowers, and a wake — it all adds up.
So how much does it cost to die in Australia? It depends.
There is no set fee for a basic funeral in Australia, but several states do require funeral directors to provide an itemised price list on their website and at their premises.
According to the government’s Moneysmart site, funerals in Australia can cost “from $4,000 for a basic cremation to around $15,000 for a more elaborate” burial.
But it is possible to spend a lot less.
