IT NEED
NOT COST
SO MUCH.
Money is not the be all and end all and really shouldn't be the deciding factor when talking about a dignified end of life. If you want a big celebration of life that's fine. But not all of us do, or want to be told we should do. With a bit of planning, you can even organise a do-it-yourself funeral? In Australia it has always been our right to handle these things ourselves.
While the idea of a DIY funeral is not for all of us, it's good to know that it's possible. Queensland lacks the legislation to tell us what a funeral should look and who should be involved. We're led to believe that we must call a funeral director to take our loved one away, when in fact you do not even require a funeral director for any part of the process.
Again, it's not for everyone and there are some common sense practices that need to take place, and paperwork that needs to be completed still, but it is always your choice as to how and when the next steps should take place*.
As a member of the Australian Home Funeral Alliance, it is our aim to provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your own funeral and of those that you love. Be sure to read our story and the other articles in our blog for insights into the possibilities available to you.
* While death in itself is not an emergency, if a death is unexpected you will need to call 000 and the coroner will most likely be involved. After this however, you are entitled to take responsibility of your person and make arrangements how you see fit.
