Griefline

Grief can be a strange thing. Sometimes it arrives all at once, sometimes it takes a while to catch up with you. Some days you’re completely overwhelmed, other days you feel almost nothing at all. There isn’t a right way to do it.

If you’d like someone outside your family and friends to talk to, Griefline is a national service offering support and resources for people living with grief and loss.

Griefline is now part of SANE Australia. The Griefline name and website still give you access to grief and loss information, while some services have moved across to SANE’s support pathways.

What can Griefline help with?

Grief isn’t only about the death of someone you love. It can follow the loss of a relationship, a home, a job or business, your health, a sense of connection… anything that mattered deeply to you.

Griefline’s resources are for all kinds of grief and loss, whether it happened last week or a long time ago. You don’t have to be at a particular “stage” before you’re allowed to ask for help.

Talking to someone

The Griefline number is 1300 845 745.

Since August 2026, calls to this number go through to SANE Australia’s Service Enquiries line during its operating hours: Monday to Friday, 10am to 8pm AEST/AEDT. They can help you find out what grief and loss support, resources and community services are available.

It’s worth knowing what this service is, and what it isn’t. It’s not an emergency or crisis service, and the redirected line doesn’t provide counselling on the spot.

If you or someone else is in danger, call 000. For crisis support, you can also contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Online support

Griefline also gives you access to online forums where people living with grief and loss can connect with others who understand something of what they’re going through. The forums are open 24 hours a day and professionally moderated.

If talking face to face or over the phone feels like too much, an online community can be a gentler place to start. You can read, join in, or just have a look around until you feel ready.

You don’t have to know what you need

One of the hard things about grief is that it’s not always clear what would actually help. You might want to talk, you might want information, you might want to hear from people who’ve been through something similar… or you might just want to know that what you’re feeling isn’t unusual.

You don’t need to have it worked out before you reach out. Griefline and SANE can help you figure out what’s available and where to find it.

A place to start

Grief doesn’t follow a timetable, and there’s no prize for getting through it quickly.

If Griefline sounds like it might help, start with their website or call 1300 845 745 during service hours. And if you’re not ready to talk to anyone yet, that’s okay too. There are resources you can read in your own time.

You don’t have to do grief perfectly. You just don’t have to do it completely alone.
